Course Details

As our teens set out on their journey of independence they need a solid foundation of knowledge, skills and plans to reduce their risk behind the wheel. Quality driver education is a critical element in developing safe driving attitudes, improving hazard recognition and managing visibility, time and space in traffic.

AAA plays a key role in preparing teens for the journey by offering AAA's How to Drive Online that delivers the rules and essential elements of safe driving in an interactive and innovative way. Approved in the state of Texas for novice driver classroom education, this online program aims to ensure that safe driving habits are developed and maintained for life. AAA has been in the driver training business since 1935, so trust AAA to help keep the roads safe for all travelers.

With the Parent-Taught Drivers Ed, teen drivers work with a parent or guardian to learn safe driving skills and the rules of the road. Your parent or another qualified instructor will help you complete our TDLR-approved course and supervise your 44 hours of behind-the-wheel practice. Parent Information

Teens and their parents or guardians are required to request state approval to participate in Parent Taught Drivers Ed by completing a TDLR application. Once approved, TDLR will send a Parent Taught Driver Ed Program Guide with information and forms. Once you have the TDLR guide, you will be able to begin the online course material necessary to apply for your first Texas learners permit and driver's license.

The Texas Parent Taught Driver Education Program Guide (PTDE) is provided by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and is required to be obtained before starting any course work. The guide includes the documents needed to successfully complete the program and to obtain a learner's permit and, eventually, a provisional license. This includes general parent-taught program information, learner and provisional license application checklists, and an official behind-the-wheel practice log, among other items.

REQUEST the PTDE Guide: A parent or legal guardian must request the program guide from the TDLR. This guide and its fee are not included in your course purchase price. The guide costs $20.00. To request your guide, you have two options.

1) You may fill out the Request for Parent Taught Driver Education Program Guide at https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/ParentTaught/PTSelect.aspx. Here you may select to have the guide emailed or mailed to yourself, and the $20.00 fee is payable by credit card.

2) You may fill out the following request form https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/driver/forms/DPS001.pdf and mail it with a $20.00 check or money order payable to: Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
PO Box 12157
Austin, TX 78711-2157

**Please note that requesting the guide by email will let you receive it sooner than by mail.**

IMPORTANT: After you pay for the guide, you may immediately download a PDF version of it from the download link on the payment confirmation screen.

In addition to the immediate download, if you selected for the guide to be emailed, you will soon receive an email with an additional link to download the guide. If you do not see the email in your inbox, check your spam or junk mail folders. If you selected for the guide to be mailed, allow up to 14 days for delivery by USPS after TDLR has processed your request.

You may check the status of your Request For A Parent Taught Education Program Guide at: https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/ParentTaught/PT_Search.aspx.

START THE COURSE: Once you receive your program guide and review the course requirements, you can move forward with the AAA How to Drive course material.
